Overview

Empower your investments with purpose: This product makes social impact investing accessible and impactful for everyone, transforming your aspirations into tangible change.

Background

Impact investing is a transformative finance approach, blending social and environmental goals with financial returns. This strategy includes mutual funds or ETFs focused on values-aligned companies, charitable contributions, and direct investments in positive change businesses. Investors can support sustainable practices, female-led companies, or solutions like affordable housing and renewable energy, avoiding firms that contradict these values.

However, barriers remain for low-income communities. Individuals like Sam, a business owner, and Lila, a community advocate, want to invest locally but lack knowledge and networks. High entry costs deter people like Maria from contributing to causes they care about. A simplified, accessible platform is needed to democratize impact investing.

Project Stametemnt

A socially-conscious individual with limited investment experience needs a simplified, accessible platform to participate in impact investing. This platform should enable them to contribute to causes they care about without requiring large capital outlays or extensive financial knowledge.

Current consumer beliefs, understanding, and barriers
  • Beliefs and Understanding: Many in this audience believe that significant capital and extensive financial knowledge are prerequisites for investing, which makes them hesitant to participate in the investment market.
  • Barriers/Negative Perceptions: The primary barriers include a perception of the complexity of the investment process, skepticism about the actual impact of their investments, and distrust towards traditional financial institutions.
Goals
Short-term Goals:
  • Launch an MVP with core features like a curated list of investment opportunities, educational content, and basic impact tracking.
  • Establish partnerships with NGOs, social enterprises, and ethical companies.
  • Grow an initial user base through targeted marketing campaigns.
Long-term Goals:
  • Expand app features to include advanced impact analytics and personalized investment recommendations.
  • Become a recognized platform for impact investing known for transparency and user empowerment.
  • Promote financial decisions that consider social and environmental impacts among diverse individuals.
Competitive Landscape

Our platform makes social impact investing accessible and engaging for those with limited financial resources or investment knowledge. Unlike Acorns and Stash, which lack a strong social impact focus, we integrate impactful investment opportunities with educational resources. While Betterment and OpenInvest offer ESG portfolios, they may not fully cater to novices or those seeking a community-oriented experience. Ellevest targets female investors but may not address the broader range of social and environmental causes our platform encompasses.

Design Targets

Socially-conscious individuals aged 18-40, including millennials and Gen Z, seek to make a positive impact through their financial decisions despite limited investment experience or capital. They value sustainability, ethics, social equity, and prefer tech-driven financial transactions.

At this stage, we developed four user stories. The primary focus of this case study will be on scenarios 1 and 2.

Information Architecture

After gathering this data, we began creating a wireframe before proceeding to design our low-fidelity prototype.

Research goals
  • Validate platform functionality for discovering, creating investments, interacting with community, tracking impact, and learning about investing.
  • Confirm platform content, text, and visuals provide users with enough information for informed investment decisions.
  • Validate that the platform is accessible and easy to understand for new investors.
Key Benefits
  • Accessibility: Our platform enables participation in impact investing for those with limited resources or knowledge through micro-investing and a user-friendly interface.
  • Education: We offer tutorials, infographics, and webinars to empower users with financial and impact investing knowledge.
  • Community Engagement: Users can join forums to share experiences and be part of a sustainable investing movement.
  • Transparent Impact Tracking: Real-time updates and reports show the social and environmental impact of investments.
In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of this product, we interviewed individuals interested in ethical investing. Their insights into their investing habits and preferences significantly informed our research. We explored their experiences and expectations for a finance app that promotes ethical investing and educates new investors. The feedback we gathered was invaluable, offering essential data and authentic suggestions to enhance our UI.
Interview Questions
  • What kind of information would help you feel more confident about making investment decisions that align with your values?
  • What features do you believe are essential in an impact investing platform to make it accessible and user-friendly for someone with your level of investment experience?

Who We Tested

User Feedback
Successes
  • Successful interview: User found app design comprehensive, easy to use, and intuitive, especially the bottom navigation bar.

  • Positive feedback on design: User liked the overall app design, indicating a successful design approach.

  • Intuitive navigation: Bottom navigation bar was highlighted as a particularly intuitive feature by the user.
Opportunities
  • Participants noted having to scroll a bit to find the “Discover More Projects” button, there is an opportunity to make this more prominent on the landing page.

  • Several users, including Marcela, noted the absence of titles or clear labels on graphs displaying investment growth or impact. Adding descriptive titles and clearer labels could reduce confusion and improve the user understanding of data presented.

  • While the project profiles are generally well-received, there is room to include more detailed impact metrics and historical data. This could enhance decision-making for users who are evaluating the potential return and impact of their investments.

Opportunities in Prototype

After user testing, valuable insights were gathered regarding necessary changes and areas that require further review.

At this stage of the project, we felt confident and began creating a robust, high-fidelity prototype based on the previous iterations.

Visual Design

I am tasked with creating the visual identity of the platform, including designing the website and mobile app interfaces. I will ensure that the visual design communicates the brand's values and appeals to the target audience, while also prioritizing usability and accessibility.

Preliminary sketch of logos: I combined an upturned arrow to symbolize positive stock activity with a leaf to allude to sustainability.

Key Succeses
  • Users found the app design comprehensive, easy to use, and intuitive, especially the bottom navigation bar.
  • The forum’s intuitive interaction features, like comment responses and filters, were highly praised.
  • Users enjoyed the project beneficiary stories and detailed impact reporting, providing transparency and a more human touch.
